Highlights

Itinerary

Day 1

You will be picked-up at from the airport or bus station and transferred to the office for a tour briefing. Here you can use the internet and bathroom facilities and there are restaurants nearby where you can have breakfast before heading off on your adventure.

At 9am you will be transferred to the port where you will take a 50-minute boat ride up the Madre de Dios River until we reach the lodge. We will check into our rooms (single, double and triple options) and you will have some free time to relax in the hammocks or pool before we participate in the first activity, which will be after lunch.

After lunch we will have the opportunity to go fishing on the river, where you can catch lots of piranhas for dinner! This will be followed by a nocturnal river tour where we will look for caimans and a nighttime trail walk where you can see all the wildlife that come to life at night.

We will then head back to the lodge to have dinner.

Day 2

Today we will spend the whole day exploring Lake Sandoval, located in the National Reserve of Tambopata. It is the best way to see nature in its natural habitat including macaws, parrots, other bird species, monkeys, otters, caimans just to name a few.

We will also have the opportunity to learn about different plant species, many which are used as natural medicines.

Lunch this day will be served at the Amasisa Lodge, which is located inside the National Reserve of Tambopata, on lake Sandoval. We will have dinner back at our lodge (Madre de Dios).

Day 3

Today we will visit “Collpa de Loros” (Parrot Clay Lick), a clay wall beside the river where multiple species of parrots come every morning to supplement their diet with the minerals they find here.

Activity at parrot clay licks typically begins shortly before dawn, when the first parrots approach the clay lick area, usually in pairs as they call to each other, and then land in the trees around the clay lick.

It is understood that they perch on the higher branches while waiting for the rest of the parrots to check for predators in the area. This creates a natural spectacle of sounds and colours that bird lovers and nature enthusiasts will not want to miss.

We will then head back to the lodge for lunch.

After lunch we will head on a botanical trail to an organic farm, where we can learn about the local seasonal fruits and vegetables; and also medicinal plants that the local people use to cure illness.

Dinner will be served at the lodge.

Day 4

Today’s activity will start early at 5.30am where we will take part in a canopy walkway, which will allow us to see the rainforest from a different perspective at about 30 meters above ground level.

The bridges allow us to appreciate nature from a high altitude, where we will have a panoramic view of the Rio Madre de Dios. From the platforms you can observe different bird species such as toucans and macaws.

After breakfast get ready for a fun & challenging activity, located 30 meters above the ground in the trees! That is right, we will be zip lining!

For this activity, an instructor will guide us and advise us on the use of the safety harness before starting the activity and feeling the adrenaline rush from sliding through the trees. We will then return to the lodge for lunch and rest.

In the afternoon we will visit Monkey Island located on Madre de Dios River. Many different species of monkeys such as brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, saddle back tamarin, and white capuchin can be found on the island. We will also have time to go kayaking on the river.

We will then head back to the lodge where you will take your transport back to Puerto Maldonado arriving between 4:30 pm and 5 pm.
